Saoirse Ronan Lands Dual Lead Roles in Stephenie Meyer?s The Host

Saoirse Ronan Lands Dual Lead Roles in Stephenie Meyers The HostBig news for Stephenie Meyer fans: The bestselling author’s Twilight follow-up, The Host, has found its onscreen lead. Deadline reports that 17-year-old Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, Atonement) will play opposite herself in the Andrew Niccol-penned adaptation of Meyer’s sci-fi/romance novel about an alien named Wanderer who takes over the body of earthling Melanie Stryder, only to discover that her human host’s own memories and emotions affect her.

According to Deadline, the adaptation was developed independently by producers Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz, and Paula Mae Schwartz, with Meyer’s close involvement. Niccol was brought on to adapt the novel and may return to direct.

But on to the details in Ronan’s casting and why this is a promising turn in The Host’s road to the screen.

It’s unusual for young actors to play older; Ronan recently turned 17, while Mel Stryder is written as a 20-year-old. But filming could take a while to come together, and besides, few young actresses have the preternatural maturity of the Oscar-nominated Ronan, whose striking looks often lend her an ethereal, otherworldly quality. In short, fans of the novel should be happy.

Saoirse Ronan Lands Dual Lead Roles in Stephenie Meyers The HostExactly how the film will tackle portraying two distinct personalities sharing the same body will remain to be seen; Wanderer, or Wanda as she’s eventually nicknamed, is a member of an alien race that invades planets and erases the memories of their physical hosts, but when she takes possession of Mel’s body, both minds continue to exist at once — think of the symbiotic Trills in the Star Trek universe (Jadzia Dax 4 Ever!) and you have an idea of how this might play out.

What’s even more intriguing for Ronan is that…

Todd Haynes Making Web Concert Film With My Morning Jacket

Todd Haynes Making Web Concert Film With My Morning JacketIn the grand tradition of David Lynch and Duran Duran, director Todd Haynes and rock heroes My Morning Jacket will soon collaborate on a streaming concert film as part of the American Express Unstaged series.

The May 31 concert will stream from the Louisville Palace Theater in Louisville, Ky. — My Morning Jacket’s hometown — via the series’s site at YouTube.

The band’s lead singer, Jim James, appeared in Haynes’s 2007 Bob Dylan film I’m Not There, after which time the filmmaker developed a fondness for MMJ. (James sang the Dylan song “Goin’ to Acapulco” with Calexico, however, in the movie.) Haynes has plenty of other experience filming music sequences — most notably in his 1998 glam-rock saga Velvet Goldmine — but this will be Haynes’s first time directing a live broadcast.

So what do we have to look forward to? Not even Haynes seems to know at this point: “We’re jumping right into it,” he told the NYT in an interview this morning. “I have some obligations throughout May, so it was tight from the start, but it just sounded like a really cool opportunity and experience for me.” Asked about his more general approach to depicting music onscreen, Haynes replied: “The way I sort of approach my work is that the historical and socioeconomic and cultural worlds that the music is exploring dictate the visual experience, and the way that we approach it specifically on film.”

That… clears it up? Suggestions welcome from Haynes and My Morning Jacket devotees alike. I say just reprise Evan Rachel Wood’s Mildred Pierce nude scene and the rest should take care of itself.

23 Directors Will Help Remake Richard Linklater?s Slacker

23 Directors Will Help Remake Richard Linklaters SlackerWhen Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater released Slacker in July of 1991, he helped usher in the independent film movement that would dominate much of the mid-’90s and still resonates today. With Slacker’s 20th anniversary fast approaching, the Austin Film Society and The Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas have decided to commemorate that seminal film by commissioning 23 Austin filmmakers to help direct a remake. Awesome! Can this start a trend?

Per the Austin Film Society press release:

Each scene will be recreated, using the original dialogue and locations (whenever possible), and individual scenes will then be compiled to create the remake, presenting the city’s changing face while showcasing some of its most exciting talent. Donations of $50 or higher to SLACKER 2011 will receive a ticket to the World Premiere on August 31st with the remake filmmakers and Richard Linklater in attendance for Q&A. More details on the event will be released when finalized.

Following in the footsteps of that crazypants Footloose remake, this is the second collaborative remake effort to make waves here in 2011 (albeit one done under totally different circumstances). If only more remakes were filmed in this way! Wouldn’t it be cool to see what a group of filmmakers could do with any number of planned Hollywood remakes — especially if major filmmakers were involved in the process? (The only recognizable name on Slacker duty is director Jay Duplass.) Picture an omnibus like the Woody Allen-Martin Scorsese-Francis Ford Coppola-directed New York Stories, but with the goal of recreating one single narrative. That kind of directorial mind-meld has to be better than just a straight update of To Catch a Thief, right? Can’t Steven Soderbergh get on this
